Journaling

Hello Friends!

After years of resistance, I fell in love with the beautiful practice of journaling. A space to be quiet and alone in my thoughts, hopes, worries, and dreams. Journaling was suggested to me many times, but I resisted. Why? I didn’t like seeing my intimate thoughts on paper. It felt very vulnerable. However, after committing to this practice over the last year, it is now an essential part of my wellness. Some days my writings are very short and other days I’m driven to be extremely detailed. I might save the pages or I’ll tear them up. What I have learned is that there is no right or wrong way to journal and no need to be perfect.

Benefits of journaling

  • Expressing emotions: Writing down my thoughts and emotions helped me move forward from stressful events.

  • Reducing stress: Journaling helped me understand events through an objective lens. This often was helpful in problem solving and reducing stress.

  • Increasing self-awareness: I found patterns in how I think, feel, and react to situations. This was helpful in understanding my triggers and motivations for behaviors.

  • Practicing gratitude: I started writing three things I was grateful for each morning. It revolutionized the way I start my day.

How to journal

  • Write without judgment: Give yourself permission to be imperfect. Let go of spelling and grammar, carry no judgement.

  • Write consistently: Having a set time and place helped my journaling practice be more consistent.

  • Use prompts: If you're feeling stuck, you can try using prompts to get started. I’ve listed some below!

  • Try different styles: Expressive writing, gratitude journaling, drawing a picture, or bullet points are all ways to journal. There is no wrong way.

Journal prompts

  • Reflect on a recent accomplishment

  • Write about a hobby or activity that brings you joy

  • Explore three things that make you unique

  • Describe a self-care practice that you enjoy

  • Write a letter to your future self

  • Reflect on a time when you overcame self-doubt or fear

  • Write a list of 10 things that always make you smile

  • Explore a limiting belief you hold about yourself

  • Describe a place in nature that brings you peace

  • Reflect on a significant life lesson you have learned

  • Write a love letter to yourself

Journaling has been a gift to my wellness practice. It allows me to express my feelings without fear or judgment. I have enjoyed a sense of peace and gained a deeper understanding of my own experiences. What I resisted for years has now become one of my favorite morning rituals. I am grateful for it. Why not give it a try this week?

Stay well•ish friends!
